Papua New Guinea (PNG) has some of the best diving in the world. About twice the number of species of fish, compared to the Red Sea, and about ten times more coral species compared to the Caribbean. A special feature of Papua is the deep water located very close to the shore. Just a couple of steps away from the beaches reef walls fall reaching up to 984 ft or more. This can be found in most places on the north coast, the south coast of New Ireland and New Hanover (Kavieng area) and parts of Milne Bay. In the more sheltered bays, delicate coral formations extend to enormous sizes. This is typical of Kimbe Bay in West New Britain.

Another distinguishing feature is the proximity of dive sites to the islands. Boat transfers are short. Hundreds of shipwrecks, many of World War II, are scattered. Boats, planes and submarines, some of them still in excellent condition, have been transformed into living coral reefs.
