On a global scale, the Mediterranean Sea ("the sea in the middle of the Earth") is only a "small" portion of water of 2.5 million sq km located between Europe, North Africa and South West Asia. Connected to the Atlantic Ocean through the Strait of Gibraltar. Its origins go back to the great oceans formation and it plays an important role in history, its waters sailed by Phoenicians, Romans and Greeks. It is the world´s second largest inland sea after the Caribbean, reaching its greatest depth off the coast of Greece to 16801 ft.. It only constitutes 0.3% of the Earth's water volume, however, is home to around 12,000 species, which is between 10 - 18% of the total number of the marine species on the planet. With an enormous ecological value, the inhabitants of the Mediterranean are mainly species from the Atlantic Ocean that have had to adapt to the particular conditions of the Mediterranean waters. Thus slight tides, the high degree of evaporation and some other features have generated a large number of endemic species.
