Famous for being considered as "the pearl of the Mediterranean", Alexandria will fascinate you with its captivating blend of history and modernity. Although not much remains of the ancient city, modern Alexandria has a Mediterranean atmosphere with its European residential houses alongside the old cafes and Greco-Roman monuments. The Catacombs of Kom el-Shouqafa, hidden underwater ruins Montazah Maamoura and vibrant art scene make Alexandria a sensational destination.

In the northwest of Alexandria is Abu-Qir, where archaeologists continue exploring the sunken cities of Canopus and Herakleion since 1992. In addition to a prominent religious centre, the city of Herakleion was the main commercial hub of the Mediterranean in the sixth century. When they started to dive in this area, archaeologists discovered ruins of a Herakleion temple, which was dedicated to Amun and Heracles-Khonsu. They also found giant statues of gods, Ptolemaic kings and their consorts, pottery, jewelry, and numerous wrecks of wooden boats.

The city of Alexandria and the many NGOs that cooperate with UNESCO are working on a project that will see the construction of an underwater museum where various artifacts will be presented to the public. You can book diving excursions in the archaeological zone of the Submerged Cities of Abu-Qir.
